In 2022, I competed in the Atlantic regional Japanese Speech Contest at Saint Mary's University in Halifax, where I won first place in the Advanced category. This allowed me to represent the Atlantic region at the 33rd Annual Canadian National Japanese Speech Contest in Calgary, Alberta.

During the pandemic, I discovered bonsai as a hobby. I quickly became fascinated by this rigorous "living art form". This speech explores how bonsai taught me to slow down, appreciate the details around me, and develop a deeper respect for nature.

Translation (English)

Hello everyone. My name is John Yorke. Today, I will be speaking about "The Power of Bonsai". Thank you for listening.

When you hear the word "bonsai", what comes to mind? Perhaps you imagine an elderly man sitting in a garden, carefully looking at a small tree and slowly trimming it with tiny scissors for hours. Regardless, while most people have heard of bonsai, most people don't really know what it is.

Bonsai is not just a hobby for elderly people. In fact, I started practicing bonsai during the recent pandemic. So far, I have collected many different bonsai. I take care of my bonsai every day. This art has taught me patience and how to appreciate nature.

So, what exactly is bonsai? Is it simply about trimming trees? Bonsai is a complex living art form. Around one thousand years ago, bonsai originated in China. After being introduced to Japan, it became an important cultural symbol. Bonsai artists require many years of training to create highly developed works of art. In bonsai, patience is considered a great virtue. The goal is to create a miniature representation of the mature trees found in nature. These elements together create the essence of bonsai. Through my own experience, I have discovered many benefits from practicing this wonderful art.

Bonsai completely changed the way I perceive nature. I have always cared about nature, but before practicing bonsai, when I looked outside, I only saw greenery. Trees were simply trees, and there was nothing particularly special about them. I thought that no matter where I went, I would see the same kinds of trees. With this view of nature, the beautiful forests around us seemed to simply exist. I think many other people see nature in the same way. However, the reality is that the world is not just a sea of green — there are many things waiting to be noticed.

Every tree has its own personality, story, history, and struggles. Here in Canada, there are hundreds of different tree species, and each one has its own unique characteristics that make it different from others. Thanks to bonsai, the world around me has become magical. Trees are not simply trees. Spring buds, changing autumn leaves, trees remind us of the exciting changes of each season. All of these factors have allowed me to understand the beauty of nature more deeply.

Every tree is important and deserves protection. If more people thought this way and valued nature more, we could protect our beautiful forests. The only way to protect nature and the environment is to respect nature.

Finally, bonsai is an art that many people can learn from. By practicing bonsai, our respect for nature can deepen. This appreciation for nature can lead to greater happiness in life. Taking care of bonsai can make people kinder. I believe the power of bonsai is truly remarkable.

Thank you very much.
